On the morning of August 27th 2020, VNITO Alliance, Quang Trung Software City (QTSC) cooperated with Nashtech Vietnam to hold a webinar titled "Experience in building organizational capability for getting CMMI". The webinar deployed on the platform of online collaboration solution (hoptructuyen.qtsc.com.vn) provided by QTSC and partners.
More than 100 people joined the online event and nearly 30 questions were raised for the speaker – Ms. Ly Vo, QA Director of Nashtech. During the webinar, Ms. Ly discussed several vital topics, such as the introduction of CMMI Dev version 2.0 and how it differs from the previous versions; how to optimize the organization's processes and overall quality for achieving CMMI; Experience in moving to the next higher CMMI level; and Experience in evaluating the success of CMMI Dev 2.0 Level 5.
According to Ms. Ly, CMMI is a certification not only for IT enterprises but also for manufacturing companies. CMMI helps firms improve organizational capacity and optimize business processes to meet their goals. Therefore, when a company wants to get CMMI, it is necessary to identify four key components first:
- Why: Why does your organization want to get CMMI? The purpose of getting the certificate is to improve the processes, increase productivity, and promote manufacturing efficiency.
- How: How does your company create actions for improvement to get this certificate? The question “How” depends on enterprises' operating model. Thus, the process improvement should match the organizational capacity and culture, as there is no standard model for all companies.
- Who: Q&A department will be primarily responsible for achieving the certificate.
- What: which processes need to change and how to do it depend on company's operations management, including the changes from CEO to each employee.
Mr. Nguyen Khanh Chi – Head of APAC Engagement at NashTech Vietnam said, “CMMI is an improvement process, which relies upon the enterprise's objectives, vision, and business goals. The most vital steps in the implementation phase are the comparison of the current competency evaluation results with the purposes that company desires to achieve, identifying company's strengths and weaknesses, and creating improvement plan. Furthermore, there is also the step of data analysis and appraisal performance report.”
To get CMMI, the company must determine the organization’s ability. This does not depend on the number of employees, as a company having 15 to 20 workers can achieve CMMI. CMMI level 1-3 focuses on building and forming working behaviors as standard processes for employees. The processes by which employees feel satisfied should be suitable for company's culture.
A quantitative analysis of data, which reflects the strengths and weaknesses of a company, is required for upgrading to CMMI 4, 5. At the levels 4 and 5, the company should use statistical and other quantitative techniques, as well as base on data assessment to plan effectively.
Finally, Ms. Ly answered a range of questions relating to NashTech's experience in getting CMMI 5. She noted that most of the management and statistics activities relied upon data. Therefore, it is essential for companies to prepare well all resources: measurement and management system; statistical techniques; and human resource with in-depth knowledge of statistics.
